Arliss Howard was born Leslie Richard Howard on October 18, 1954. He is an American actor, writer and film director.
Howard was born in Independence, Missouri. His career was firmly established with stand-out roles in Full Metal Jacket and Ruby, and for starring in and directing the film Big Bad Love (also starring his wife Debra Winger). In Till Death Us Do Part (1992), Howard portrayed author and attorney Vincent Bugliosi, who led the prosecution in the Tate-LaBianca murder trial. He is currently appearing in the NBC weekly drama series Medium.
He is married to actress Debra Winger; they have one son together.

The Farrelly Brothers admitted that this was a little bit different than some of their previous comedies, but as with all their movies they like for the audience to feel a connection with each of the characters. Shallow Hal was a more emotional movie and the producers spent a lot of time making sure it would not be portrayed as a mere "fat joke" type of movie, but one that has a strong message associated with it.
